Happy Birthday DougieOnline.com!

One year ago today, I posted my first entry on DougieOnline.com! So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :D

July 4
The Emperor

The emperor was visiting Hokkaido this week. His final destination before heading back to Tokyo was my fair city of Asahikawa. I made it out of my apartment just in time to see him as he rode by my grocery store. There was a huge crowd of people waiting for him and everyone had little flags of Japan waving. It was really neat to see him go by. A few of my students from Asahikawa Minami High School were there, too and we got some pictures afterwards.

Hello little patriotic one!

The emperor is in the back, on the left; the empress is on the side we can't see

I tried to enhance it, but it's not that great

Asahikawa Commercial High School's Festival

Most high schools in Japan hold a weekend festival during the summer. It's a chance for the students to show off their school to the public. Usually clubs will have displays showcasing their activities (calligraphy, flower arranging, photography, etc.). There is always a lot of food, prepared by the students themselves. Since this school is a commercial high school, there was an emphasis on shopping. Many classes had set up their own store and went through the planning, managing, budgeting, etc. of running a business. It was good practice for them. People from all over the city came to purchase food and other goods. The school band (winners of several major national championships) also put on a spectacular performance in the gym.

Yakitori, anyone?

July 14

Today was the my last visit to Shibetsu Commercial High School this school term. They were busy preparing for their school festival this coming weekend (which I will miss :( ). This picture is of a model of that stupid NOVA Usagi Rabbit thing. It's a pink bunny with big ears and a beak for a mouth. Yeah, the nightmares ensue...

Someone has a good idea

This is going to be a big dragon

The office held a party tonight to thank Mike for three years of service as an ALT and to wish him well back in Canada. Everyone had a good time, especially after Mike wooed us with a few selections on his guitar. Goodbye Mike and Jess! We miss you!
